The Wisconsin Language Roadmap, a project of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Language Institute and International Division, was funded by a two-year (2017-19) grant from The Language Flagship of the National Security Education Program in the U.S. Department of Defense, with substantial support from the University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Letters & Science and The International Division.

The Language Flagship is a national initiative to change the way Americans learn languages through a groundbreaking approach to language education for students from kindergarten through college. Through a network of 25 Flagship Programs at 21 institutions of higher education across the United States, The Language Flagship graduates students who will take their place among the next generation of global professionals, commanding a superior level of proficiency in one of ten languages critical to U.S. national security and economic competitiveness. The UW-Madison Russian Flagship Program and South Asian Flagship Languages Initiative are funded by The Language Flagship.
